How to choose trading risk management software for MT4 and MT5
Risk management software can calculate exposure, send an alert or enforce a stopping rule. These are different functions. If your problem is continuing to trade after a limit, check the tool’s actual action, not just its dashboard.
In this guide
Start with the problem you need to solve
Need to convert a risk percentage into money before entering a position? A calculator may be enough. Know your limits but keep breaking them during a session? Look for a mechanism that enforces your stopping decision. “Risk protection” alone does not explain what a product can do.
| Function | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Risk calculation | Converts percentages into money or estimates exposure. | Calculation reference, costs and instrument specifications. |
| Loss alert | Notifies you when a threshold is approached or reached. | An alert alone does not stop further trading. |
| Position stop-loss | Provides an exit instruction for a position. | Execution conditions; it does not end your entire session. |
| Session lock | Enforces a stopping rule on the connected account. | The exact action, required connectivity and reset conditions. |
What does a trading lock actually do?
Ask whether the software rejects an order before it opens or acts afterwards. With SentinelleTrader, new positions are automatically closed while a lock is active. That is not the same as guaranteed rejection by the broker before an order opens. Delay, trading costs and slippage can cause additional losses.
Check the drawdown reference, which losses count towards the SL counter, the time zone and the next reset. Read what happens after a loss limit for more detail. No software turns a losing strategy into a profitable one.
Local EA or hosted protection?
An Expert Advisor running in your terminal relies on that environment and its automated-trading permissions. Hosted protection removes the need to keep your personal computer on, but still depends on broker connectivity and the service. In either case, entering a setting does not prove that protection is active.
Before a session, check connection status and the values actually applied. When trading from a phone, make sure you are using the same account that is being monitored. Our guide to automating MT4/MT5 rules explains these checks.
What to check during a SentinelleTrader trial
- Compare Essential and Pro for the number of accounts and protections you need.
- Create your account and confirm the trial on Stripe. Registration alone does not activate protection.
- Confirm your email when prompted; check your spam folder too.
- Select MT4 or MT5, then enter the login, exact broker server and main trading password, not a read-only investor password.
- Set your rules, wait for the connection and check the protection status on the dashboard.
The offered trial lasts 7 days and requires a payment card on Stripe. A free trial is not charged before its end; unless cancelled, your selected plan then becomes paid. Current prices and terms appear on the pricing page and at checkout. Do not create a real loss just to test a lock.
Questions worth asking before choosing
- Does my account use MT4 or MT5 with the necessary permissions?
- Do I need a daily limit, a loss counter or trading hours as well?
- How will I know about a disconnection?
- When can I edit my rules and when does a lock end?
- Does my prop firm permit this tool, and do its calculations match the programme’s rules?
Prepare your own figures with the risk budget calculator. For a challenge, also review the prop-firm-specific checks. A useful choice addresses a precise rule, with its technical limitations understood.
